(versione italiana dell'intervista a fine pagina dopo i video dell'artista)
I am here introducing with great pleasure a brilliant German artist with a powerful and versatile voice : katie drives. She is a rock and alternative pop singer from Berlin with a fresh punk attitude.
Katie sings about burdensome topics that young adults are facing. The new single "Anywhere but here" is available on all streaming platforms and is the third single just released, in anticipation of her second EP “Safe And Sad”, due out in March.

Hi katie, thank you for being here with Art-Waves. I'm so delighted to meet you and learn more about who you are as an artist! Before we get going, I would like you to introduce yourself to our readers. Tell us a little bit about your background: your studies, music influences...
Hi, thank you so much for having me! I’m katie drives from Berlin in Germany. Originally I’m from the countryside and grew up on classical music, learned playling piano and sing in several choirs. As teenage I developed a huge passion for popular music and started focusing on singing covers. After school I studied “Popular music and media”, which is not a music practical studies but most of the students where musicians as well so we had gigs together regulary. I never wrote own songs until I started my solo project in 2020 together with the producer Ole Kuhlmann. My main influences are 2000s artists like Avril Lavigne that make catchy pop songs with rock and punk sound aesthetics, as well as female fronted alternative bands like Paramore and Against The Current. Also new mainstream artists using electric guitars and organic drums again inspire me a lot e.g. Maggie Lindemann and Machine Gun Kelly.
Who are your masters and inspirational muses?
As I’m all about music I’d indeed name singers here like Avril Lavigne and Hayley Williams. There are a lot of upcoming female pop punk/ rock artists that are very inspiring in many different ways. Music, styling, aesthetics. I also often come across very inspiring girls on TikTok and Instagram when it comes to looks etc..
How did you discover your passion for music?
Even if he likes a totally different genre than I do I guess I got a general passion for music from my dad. As kid I was curious about every piece of pop music I came across and also already loved being on stage. At age of 10/ 11 I realized that my voice is kinda strong and as teenager music became my best friend. I found everything in music that I was missing in real life. I was a loner living in her head watching her classmates living their lives without actually taking part in it. I think if I was more included I might not have developed such a strong relationship to music.
Was there anything in particular that inspired you when writing “Anywhere But Here" ?
Soundwise Maggie Lindemann was an influence and my all time favorite band Paramore. I wanted to make a straight banger without electronics etc.. The lyrics speak about not fitting in. Obviously a topic that haunts me. When I wrote “Anywhere But Here” I was very unhappy about my overall situation. I didn’t like the master studies I was doing, the place I was living, I felt like I destroyed the career path I successfully built up before and I lost the connection to my beloved social surroundings I had before. I put these feelings and thoughts into the lyrics and also the situation that I often feel misunderstood by close people who only mean it well but it’s not the way that does me good.
I’d chose the colors black, pink and golden. I love styling in black and even if it’s not super hard it’s rock music that I make and I feel that I’m most passionate about the hardest and loudest parts on my songs. They feel so intense like deep black and most of my lyrics speak about negative and deep feelings and thoughts, feels like black as well. But over all I’m a quite girly appearing girls, I prefer light makeup, I like cute things, I smile often and also as an artists it doesn’t feel authentic to me to always show up serious and dark, so here’s the pink. I love mixing black with gold in outfits, I love wearing gold-colored jewelry and being elegant sometimes. That’s me and my music mixed in colors.
If you had to pick one song that best encompasses who you are as an artist, which would it be and why?
If we are talking about my own songs I might chose my debut single “Maniac”. It has soft and hard parts, low alto vocals but also gives lots of power. The lyrics are very authentic but also creatively formulated. I put a lot that I ever wanted to put in a song in this one and it was the start of a new era in my life, so it stands a lot for katie drives.
An album that changed your life is…
I would say “One of the Boys” by Katy Perry actually. Sounds super mainstream but it was the first album that really got me, I was young so that’s okay I guess haha. When I think of this album I remember me walking outside in the dark or late night alone in the living room and even if I didn’t relate (or even fully understood) what she was singing about, I was fulfilled by a feeling only music can give me, I call it the ”music-feeling”. It gave meaning to that moment. It lit the fire to my passion for music if you can say so. By the way I still very much enjoy listening to it and wish Katy Perry would go back to her pop rock era even if only for one song.
What is the general creative path of song writing for you? How does the writing process take place? Do you start with lyrics or melody first? Is there a pattern you stick to?
There is definitely no pattern, to sum it up quickly haha. Every song I wrote so far had a different process. Mostly some parts of the lyrics are first, sometimes they come automatically with a particular melody. Sometimes we worked on the instrumental first. It’s always like a huge puzzle.
What does music and making music mean to you and your listeners? Tell us about the power of music.
You often write and sing about the modern obstacles young adults face, the rollercoaster of appreciation, self-doubts, envy, and feelings of guilt when comparing to others, whether on social media or among your own friends. How much personal there is in these issues?
What are the musical goals you wish for?
A venue on your bucket list to perform at?
Katie, thank you for taking
the time to speak with me. I hope your music comes to be more and more known
and can bring deep emotions to tons of souls. I wish you much success and for your
dreams to come true!
We look forward to seeing you in Italy!
